Frequent asked questions

Engineered floors have many advantages over traditional hardwood floors. They are easy to install, require no sanding and polishing, and will last a lifetime. However, some engineered floors can be more costly than traditional hardwood floors. It’s important to look at all of your options when you’re selecting flooring. You can save money by choosing a less expensive option, such as laminate or vinyl.

What are the benefits of hardwood flooring?

Hardwood floors can last a lifetime, if you choose the right type of timber.. Hardwood floors are also very durable, easy to clean, and look great.

When cleaning your hardwood floors, use only clean, dry hands. Cleaners containing oil, wax, or abrasives will dull the finish and damage the floor. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for using a specific cleaner on your type of floor. Use a soft, clean rag or brush to scrub off any dust or dirt that has accumulated on the floor. After cleaning your hardwood floors, apply a protectant such as Shellac to provide a barrier against scratches. If your hardwood floors receive a lot of traffic, they may need to be sealed with a protective sealer. When cleaning your hardwood floors, use only clean, dry hands.

We recommend Loba Floor cleaner.

Sanding and Polishing Timber Floors Most people know that sanding is an important part of finishing a new floor, but few actually understand how to do it. Sanding should be done in several stages: First, remove the old finish with a power sander. This removes the top layer of dirt and debris.

  1. Then, using a power sander, scuff the floor to loosen up the old finish and make it more receptive to polishing.
  2. Finally, use a fine-grit, low-speed abrasive to polish the floor. The floor should be scuffed every two hours and polished about once a day. If you plan to use a pad to polish the floor, do not use abrasive pads.
  3. Sanding can be performed by hand or with a power sander. You should only sand the floor with a power sander if it is at least 5/8″ thick, otherwise it will flex and cause problems in the long run.

Two types of floor finishes can be used on most timber floors:

  1. Polyurethane floor finishes are the most widely used today. They are available either in either single or “two pack” formulations. Once dry, polyurethane finishes are perfectly safe, but their fumes are highly toxic. Wear protective gloves and eyewear and a respiratory device approved for use with toxic chemicals. Make sure the area is well ventilated both while you are applying the polish and afterwards.

  2. Oil based resins remain a popular option. They are not as hard wearing as polyurethanes, but pose less health hazards.

Floor finishes come in matt, semi-gloss or gloss finishes. A high gloss finish looks great, but is not advisable for high traffic floors: it highlights scratches and  imperfections. Once you have chosen the type of finish you want to use, follow these steps for best results

Spotted Gum timber floors can be cleaned in a relatively straightforward manner, which is crucial if you want to keep your flooring looking as good as new for as long as possible. Regular sweeping and vacuuming can help to prevent grit and filth from acting as a form of sandpaper on your timber flooring, which can be detrimental. When utilising a timber-safe floor cleaner, damp mopping can provide a more thorough clean on a less frequent basis.

The finish of your spotted gum timber flooring can be damaged by the use of abrasive cleansers and harsh chemicals. As a general guideline, avoid using these products on your indoor timber flooring and do avoid steaming as well.

We recommend using the Loba Floor cleaner together with warm water and mop.

You can lay engineered timber, laminate and hybrid products over tiles, provided that the sub-floor is leveled and flat.

Absolutely you can sand engineered timber flooring. Provided they veneer layer is thick enough.

When compared to laminate flooring, which cannot be sanded back, engineered timber floors have a true timber “wear layer” on top, which allows them to be sanded back several times and refinished several times.

We offer high-quality engineered timber flooring that is constructed from multiple layers of laminated hardwood that are tightly arranged in a cross-layer structure to form what is known as a ply-wood. The solid layer of hardwood on top is re-sandable multiple times and can be refinished with any oil or lacquer of your choosing. So when it comes to redecorating, there is no need to replace the carpet or laminate entirely; simply sand back the solid timber wear layer and re-finish with a finish that complements your new design instead!

The majority of hardwood flooring scratch repair may be handled with a little elbow grease, a small container of stain, and a fine-grit sandpaper, among other supplies. A small quantity of stain should be applied to the timber after it has been sanded in one direction only. For those who are apprehensive about using stain, walnut is a good choice. It is the oily brown dye found in walnuts that may be used to patch scratches in hardwood floors and improve the appearance of worn areas. Set aside for a few minutes, then buff with a clean towel to remove any remaining oil.

There are a variety of scratch-reducing treatments that may be applied with a cloth with no difficulty. A similar effect to the walnut dye is achieved by filling in the lighter coloured scratches. It doesn’t matter which product you use, these hardwood floor scratch removers make it nearly impossible to identify the original scratches on your hardwood flooring. You can reach out to us if you’re apprehensive about completing this process on your own time.

Despite the fact that engineered timber flooring is more durable than regular timber flooring, it is nevertheless susceptible to scratching. High-traffic locations are where you’ll see this most commonly. The use of a wax-based repair product designed exclusively for engineered flooring can help you fix scratches on your floors. It is possible to find a wide variety of brands. It’s important to check the label to ensure that it’s appropriate for your flooring, or you can call us for advice.

The filler will be pushed into the scratch with the help of a putty knife during this step. It will make the scratch very imperceptible, if not completely undetectable, in most cases. Remember to carefully read the label and directions before using any products!

Remove paint from the timber flooring while it is still wet as once the paint has dried, it must be scraped or dissolved with a solvent, which is time-consuming and ineffective. The removal of oil-based paint is more difficult than the removal of latex paint because oil-based paint is harder to remove, and the solvents used to dissolve it might harm the floor finish. You should always try other methods of paint removal before resorting to solvents, whether the paint is water-based or oil-based.

We recommend using rubbing alcohol, denatured alcohol, a paint removing solvent, paint thinners, or cleansing pads. Or the easiest is to just apply Loba Floor Care remover

Engineered hardwoods that have been properly treated are water resistant, but they are not waterproof. However, this does not rule out the possibility of using them throughout the house. They are truly a fantastic flooring option for practically every area in the house. It is water resistant as long you take care of the floor it will be safe to lay in the kitchen.
